The Cherry Orchard
by Anton Chekhov
Presented by: The third year Performing Arts Degree students of North Hertfordshire College
The Cherry Orchard is a play about an large Russian house and estate which are crumbling and poverty stricken. The aristocratic owner is unable to realise that she has to change in order to survive. The play was written in 1903/4 and first performed on Chekhov's 44th birthday, shortly before he died and the first attempt at a Russian revolution was made. The play shows a deep understanding of both the impoverished aristocracy and the raising status of the 'one time' serfs. This is a play for both then and now!
