I feel sure there is no need to go into fine detail about this production - everyone knows the BBC comedy series about the Home Guard of Walmington-on-Sea, who battle daily against the Germans (not to mention ARP Warden Hodges), but not many realise that a few of the episodes were adapted for the stage. I have chosen three hilarious episodes: The Deadly Attachment, The Godiva Affair, Mum's Army and the Floral Dance. These episodes have been linked into one show with extra script written for me at the beginning of the year by the late John Gardiner.
In The Deadly Attachment the platoon have to guard a captured U-boat Captain and his crew. But fearless Captain Mainwaring incurs German displeasure when he orders the defiant prisoners to be served soggy fish and chips!
Mum's Army sees the Home Guard recruiting women, but as Mrs Mainwaring “hasn't left the house since Munich”, she won't be joining her husband's platoon. So when newcomer Mrs Gray enlists, Captain Mainwaring is set for a “brief encounter”.
In The Godiva Affair the platoon are involved in fund-raising for the carnival parade which will include a ride past by Lady Godiva. Unfortunately for Captain Mainwaring, there's a last minute substitution for Lady Godiva!
So you can see from the above that as well as the much-loved characters of Pike, Jonesy, Fraser, Godfrey, Walker, the redoubtable Captain Mainwaring, and his Deputy Sergeant Wilson, we have ARP Hodges, The Verger, U-boat Captain, several ladies i.e. Mrs Pike, Mrs Gray, Mrs Fox, etc - plus non-speaking parts of soldiers, German soldiers, and general chorus male and female. Something for everyone, male and female, so come along and audition and I can guarantee a good time will be had by all and during the run of the show.
