"Brenda Bly - Teen Detective"
Having watched a rather flaky dress rehearsal for this Big Spirit production I saw it on the Friday along with a full house and was even more impressed. The energy and the talents of the whole cast are what surprised me most and great credit must go to Rory for enthusing them so.
There were too many excellent acting performances to even attempt to single any out but the strength to me was in the music and the choreography. The music wasn't at all easy and Tim Hallas did a wonderful job, not only in teaching the cast to sing it but in putting together a small band which produced a totally appropriate sound. Sadly they were in the wings so couldn't receive any acknowledgment from the audience who probably thought it was all pre-recorded anyway.
Katie Rallison choreographed the entire piece with its 17 numbers and what a task that was, particularly with such a large cast not all of whom are dancers. People I spoke to, on the whole, picked that as the outstanding element of the show.
I think it was not only the excellence that was appreciated but the monumental scale of the task! I've never seen Big Spirit do anything like this before and it may be a long time before I see them do anything like it again but at least I had the chance to see a quite extraordinary production which was a great credit to them and to the whole Society.
Due to an oversight this item was held over from last month’s newsletter… Ed
