AUDITION NOTICE: James and the Giant Peach
By Roald Dahl
Adapted by Richard George
Directed by Jonathan Brown
- Audition Dates: Tuesday 5th & Thursday 7th September 7.45 p.m.
- Performance Dates: Thursday 14th to Sunday 17th December
Orphan James is sent to live with his aunts, Spiker and Sponge, after his parents are killed in a tragic accident involving a rhino, but the aunts treat him horribly. One day, he meets an old man who gives him a bag containing the strongest magic in the world. When James accidentally spills it near the old peach tree the most marvellous things happen and this is just the start of his adventures. With his new friends – Centipede, Grasshopper, Ladybird and Spider – James sets off on an incredible journey in the Giant Peach across the ocean to New York!
Cast:
- James Trotter:
- The young hero, from a downtrodden, lonely child, he develops into the brave “captain” of the insect band. Acts as narrator too.
- Narrator:
- A lovely involvement. Helps to shape the story.
- Old Green Grasshopper:
- Wise old character, friendly, courteous, musical.
- Miss Spider:
- Occasionally sharp, even a little sinister, but ultimately kind; her marathon thread-spinning to help save the peach is truly heroic!
- Centipede:
- A sparky, cocky, warm-hearted Jack-the-lad!
- Ladybird:
- Posh, and precise, pretty though not vain, volatile though level-headed.
- Earthworm:
- Not only blind, but a pessimist, a doom merchant whose standing in the group and whose self-esteem improves no end, thanks to James.
- Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker:
- James’ nasty aunts. A great double-act!
