Stepping Out, the Musical

Directed by Nicki Pope
Choreographer - Miss Katie Rallison.
Musical Director - Mr Roger Nobes

This toe-tapping musical follows the lives and loves of a group of women, and a token man who attend a weekly tap class in a dingy village hall. We get to know all the troubles and personalities of each of the characters, and follow their journey to the show's glitzy climax. A wonderful feel good show, perfect for friends, families and fans of shows such as Calendar Girls and The Full Monty.

Please bring tap shoes or shoes you can dance in. Katie will go through a few steps with you. We will also ask you to sing something, if you have something prepared bring this, if not don't worry; we just need to know you can hold a tune.

The Cast - please note ages are a guide

Mrs. Fraser - The PianistBest described as grumpy and crotchety - older character ideally can play the piano
Maxine - 30 to 40 yearsGood looking, sexy, the best dancer.
Lynne - YoungerLarger build, a good dancer, light on feet who is a happy person
Andy - 30 to 40 yearsTall and thin, stoops with no co-ordination, treated badly by her husband. Love interest to Geoffrey.
Geoffrey - 30 to 40 yearsShy and goofy with limited but competent dance ability.
Dorothy - 35 to 60ishSmall, birdlike and anxious. Looks after her mother. Doesn't smile much and makes extravagant large movements.
Mavis - 25 to 40 yearsA professional dancer who runs the class, attractive and hard working. For this role you need to be a dancer.
Sylvia - Any age over 40Bubbly, bright personality wears outrageous clothes. Big boobs and chews gum. Married, not a good dancer but doesn't care.
Rose - OlderReligious, outgoing a real character. Has very little rhythm but loves dancing.
Vera - OlderVery neat and proper, expensive clothes, confident and always tidying up after everyone.

Ideally all cast should have a basic knowledge of tap, however we plan to hold some tap lessons for those who can't tap. All cast will need to be able to sing, as it is a musical. I'm not too worried about fabulous voices, but you will need to be able to hold a tune and sing in character.

Main rehearsals are Mondays and Wednesdays; however there will be additional Sunday rehearsals.

Scripts will be available from Jan 2010, and if anyone would like a disc with the soundtrack on, please contact me directly.

I look forward to seeing you at the auditions; it will be hard work, but great fun!

Shakespeare's Henry V

Directed by Keith Swainston

This is just a quick reminder for any man, of any age, who is remotely interested in being in Henry V, that the auditions will be held on March 9th and 11th. In fact, although there are only three female roles, I may well need some ladies to be heavily disguised as 'extra' soldiers too. I have cut the cast from 39 to 30 so there are still plenty of parts on offer!

For those of you who have picked up your copies of the complete works of Shakespeare and panicking at the size of the parts and length of the play, I can confirm that it has been heavily cut. It will be fun I promise!

The audition pieces will be available from the box office in February, and on March 4th at the QMT there will be a pre-audition meeting where I will try to explain how we are going to present the biggest play I have ever tackled.

A character list with some guide to ages etc will be in next months Newsletter, however, if you're bursting to ask me any questions, like "What possessed you to take this play on?" or "Who are you to direct Shakespeare?" please do not hesitate to contact me. Oh, and the performance dates are 28th June to 3rd July.

So if you fancy working off those extra pounds from last month's festivities then rehearsing for the battle of Agincourt is for you!

"And gentlemen in the Bancroft Players now a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs'd they did not audition here"

All the best,
Keith Swainston
